Will a weighted fall away nose cone make any difference? Several launch comparisons are performed with an unweighted fall away nose cone weighing 0.4 oz and a weighted one weighing 1.0 oz. The slight weight difference yields surprising performance results. The additional weight enhances the law of inertia. An aspect of this law is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at a c...

    Hello! Im doing a similar project for school and I would like you to answer my questions: What altitude did it reach? Where did you buy that tube and the fins? Are there any alternatives to the device used to deploy the parachute? Thank you in advance.

    • @StratoFins
      @StratoFins 8 місяців тому

      Altitudes usually range between 205 - 350 ft. depending on weight of the rocket, PSI, and amount of water (wind can play a factor as well). We sell the StratoRocket (FTC tube) on our website stratofins.com/stratorocket-48-inch-3d-print-ftc-rocket/ along with a host of other water rocket related items from beginner to advanced. As you can see in the parachute video there are methods for deploying the parachute without the Chute Release, although the latter is more reliable. Also, the real benefit of the Chute Release is deploying at a lower altitude 100 - 200 ft. to minimize drifting off the field while under parachute descent.

    I thought that the altimeter needed airflow to detect changes to the barometric changes. I thought I read on the Jolly Roger Altimeter 2 that it recommends to not seal the altimeter. What am I missing?

    • @StratoFins
      @StratoFins 10 місяців тому

      I apologize for the delayed reply. The week before I was on vacation and then the following week I was trying to get caught up. Only now have I been able to respond on social media channels. Typically, with solid fuel rockets the altimeter is placed inside the tube or a chamber, which has some small holes, but you don’t want a lot of air flowing past the altimeter or it will give a false reading (suction effect). Since water rockets don’t have the luxury of placing the altimeter inside the fuselage other than maybe a nosecone, but these typically create a lot of suction like a spoiler on a car if the nosecone is open and not attached. Jolly Logic actually suggested sealing the altimeter in a small zip lock bag and I did test that theory out and it does work. The bag acts as a bladder if most of the air is removed and allows the sensors to read the barometric pressure change. The zip lock bag barrier is counterintuitive, but it actually works and the curved ascent graph on the AltimeterThree shows it working. Suction effect gives a spike and not a smooth curve in the altitude readout.

    • @StratoFins
      @StratoFins 10 місяців тому

      Glad to hear that this video was helpful to your scouts. It is all about creating a stable rocket regardless of the launcher that is employed. That is something people don't understand about physics and end up blaming the launcher rather than working on their rocket design. Restricted nozzle rockets are less forgiving, than full bore rockets when it comes to physics, but they are more efficient and require less water and hence less weight to overcome.

    Do you need the coins when using the first method with rubber bands on either side of the nose cone?

    • @StratoFins
      @StratoFins 11 місяців тому

      Any type of water rocket requires some sort of weight in the nosecone or it will flip during launch. Modeling clay is the safest, coins are okay, and even water can be used. A typical 2-liter bottle rocket needs about 1 - 1.5oz. of weight as part of the nosecone, which can include the weight of the nosecone itself. There needs to be enough mass in the front to direct the flight or the weight of the fins on the rear will want to flip and take over.

      If I am understanding your comment correctly, it is about composition or framing, which is very intentional. Professional composition for video and photography often use what is called the rule of 3rds to place the point of interest on these lines that converge at the 3rd of the screen. It makes for a more appealing composition rather than have everything in the center all the time, which is visually boring. Also, it can give lower 3rd captions space to show without covering up any action taking place in the frame.

A typical 2-liter soda bottle rocket with a parachute and pressurized to 120 PSI will have a flight duration of about 22 seconds give or take a second.

      @StratoFins Рік тому

      @@GoldAxoMC You might squeeze out 30 sec. of flight duration if you keep the rocket as light as possible so it hangs longer under chute. Weight is needed in the nosecone for launch, but when the nosecone comes down separately that will reduce rocket weight. One problem with a long hang time though is drifting off the field. Ideally, you want to deploy a chute at lower altitude so the rocket doesn't drift off the field if there is any wind.

      You might try ReliaBot 3K Carbon Fiber Sheet 0.5mm thick - amzn.to/3OCAQ75, which is very thin, low drag, stiff, durable, and lightweight. We have a new device that hasn't been released yet, because I am working on a video to explain its benefits and use. It is called the StratoJig and enables attaching whatever fin design and material you desire to a bottle neck. If you contact us on our website, I can provide more details.

      @StratoFins Рік тому

      Thank you for your kind words. We keep trying to expand our water rocket product ecosystem by developing new products and techniques. The home-grown stuff is fun and our StratoLauncher IV still allows for all of that especially when it come so fin making and rocket design. Granted the Chute Release is superior to a Tommy Timer, which you might be referring to when it comes to chute deployment. Although the Chute Release is expensive, it pays for itself by safely and reliably returning what might be an expensive rocket that may contain several hundred dollars’ worth of gear like camera, altimeter, chute release, parachute, fins, nozzle, etc. Where the Chute Release really shines is on windy days and small fields when normally your rocket would drift too far while descending under parachute from a higher altitude and land in a tree or off the field and that expensive equipment could be lost. The Chute Release delays deployment to the 100 - 200 ft. range, which minimizes drift and it is easy to use.

    You've really outdone yourself! Much nicer and faster than me mucking about with Easter plastic eggs or making a release mechanism with parts from a wind up toy and rubber band. I'd still miss making the homebrew gear, but sometimes it's nice to get a rocket into the air without the fuss

      @StratoFins Рік тому

      Thank you for your kind words and comments. Yes, I too have messed around with plastic Easter eggs for nosecones usually on FTC rockets. One main reason for developing this nosecone is that many bottle caps don’t seal well under high pressure and designing something that would allow for a rubber washer was necessary. We have several new products that we have been working on last year, but unfortunately, they are rolling out slower than planned due to continual tweaking and improvements. Glad to finally be able to release the StratoCone Mini product along with the video early this year.

    A little warning on the box would be nice that you need to assemble 24 hours before use. I assembled the same day I was planning to use it. The photo on Amazon shows Teflon tape. Loctite was included instead. Unfortunately didn’t have any Teflon tape on hand to assemble for same day use.

    • @StratoFins
      @StratoFins 2 роки тому

      Thank you for your comments. We apologize that the kit box does not have a notice about assembling 24 hrs. before use, but our assembly video does announce that. Yes, the photos on Amazon need to be updated as our product gradual improves with each production run. Initially, Teflon tape was included in the kit, but customers could not handle it and often put in where it was not needed, which created leaks. Threadlocker works better and is easier for most to use, but there is that 24 hrs. wait period. Normally this is not an issue because aside from assembling the launcher there is a fair amount of prep work required such as getting bottles ready, making weighted fall away nosecones, attaching parachutes, etc. and often waiting for good weather such as little or no wind blowing. In water rocketry it is best to prepare equipment and materials long in advance before actual launching, which makes for a much better launch day experience. That way one can “Seize the Day” when that perfect opportunity and/or weather appears and everything is already to go. However, we will take your advice and seek to add that 24 hr. notice before use to our next box print. Not that anyone reads the valuable information on it already.

    Keeping it pointing straight up and allowing the water to stop moving are petty effective. I encountered 'wobbly' flight when shooting at an angle as a wave starts up inside the rocket. You can predict the flight characteristics of a particular amount of water against such things as rocket weight, pressure and so on by using a water rocket computer model - online computer models will run in your web browser and you can either change the values of things like rocket mass, mass of water, pressure and so on manually or you can get the water rocket computer model to run itself automatically to optimise your chose value pairs (say rocket mass and water, optimised for maximum flight time).
